Dear friend,

I was deeply saddened by the news about the earthquack and the tsunmi that hit your area. My name is Suvira – I’m a Thai but live in a monastery in England. I know some Japanese and all of them are brave, firm, determine but at the same time very kind and generous. I trust being a Japanese with these qualities, you will get over everything. I hope the sock would be useful for you. Please remember that people in many countries in the world are your friends and I’m one of that.

Hello!

My name is Leslie and I live in Los Angeles, California in the United States. My husband and I just wanted you to know that you and all of Japan are in our thoughts and prayers everyday! We, and our whole country, have not forgotten you. Thank you for bearing with all you do with such grace and dignity and respect—you have shown the world the best kind of people humankind can be in the face of such tragedy. Although we grieve for your losses, we hold you in inspiring awe.

My second name is “Sachie” which I understand to mean “auspicious blessing or happiness” and the dignity that you have shown has never made me prouder to be of Japanese descent. The people of Japan are “sachie” indeed! Please do not lose hope!

We feel helpless that we cannot do more, but please accept these socks as a humble token of remembrance and respect and know that we, our family, and our countries (my husband is British) are thinking of you and hoping for peace and recovery for you very soon.

Best wishes,

Dear Friend,

I live in the state of Florida in the USA and have never experienced an earthquake or tsunami. Even though I may not know what you are personally experiencing my heart breaks for the suffering you have had to endure. All we see is a few minutes of video footage on the news but it must be a great challenge to live day to day in the aftermath. Despite all that, I pray that you have hope for restoration and that you see a bright future on the horizon. I hope these socks serve as a small token of our love.

Hello,

my name is Gayle and I live in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. I hope that this letter finds you well. I realize that you have been through devastating and difficult times and my family and I are keeping you and your country in our daily thoughts.

I will tell you a bit about myself in hopes of allowing you a little distraction. I am the oldest of 9 children. I grew up in Hawaii and moved to California when I was 11. I have a crazy little dog names Alexis, who thinks that she is my child. One of her biggest problems is that she sheds her fur a lot! My whole room is covered in her fuzz. After I brush her, I have enough of her fur to make another little dog. “Lexie” is her nickname and she loves to follow me wherever I go, especially for a ride in the car.

I work in a hospital in the emergency room, where it is very busy but I love what I do. Here in California, it has been very hot. I live pretty close to the beach so it is tolerable. At least it is not as humid as Hawaii. I love to travel and read, movies, and hanging out with my friends.

Oh yes, my other passion is coffee! I love pretty gardens, but I’m not very good at keeping plants alive. My mother is better at this.

I do hope that these socks keep your feet warm and your heart hopeful…hopeful that all will be safe soon. I will keep hope as well.

Please take care,
Gayle

Dear Friend,

Please accept this small offering of comfort. We hope they will warm your feet and your heart. It is sent with a hug, our love, and our hopes that fun and happiness will soon return to your life. We want to let you know, that we are praying for you and all the people in Japan. You are not forgotten, and we will continue to pray.

Our small Daisy Girl Scout troop in Nashville, TN, USA collected socks to send to you. One girl put up a lemonade stand to earn money to help. While she only made $3.50 selling lemonade, it was enough for a package of socks that she included in our shipment. We hope you like your new socks.

Dear Friend,

Take this pair of socks as a token of my love for the people of your country. Your life, and the lives of many have taken a detour from the perfect, smooth journey but do not give up hope on your life getting back on the smooth path again.

We all start as a young child, taking our first steps. Our innocence enchants those that are wiser, they look upon us with love, and we look at them with the same emotion.

As we grow, we become more individual, our opinion shapes our being, our lives, and even the community around us. Every single person on Earth makes the planet as it is today.

I write such things to you so you know that every person that is in difficulty now is worried about, many are being cared for. Many people hope that every single survivor lives the rest of their lives happily.

I like to write poems and stories and also draw, so writing for you is fun for me, and i hope you enjoy reading this letter too.

I like to write poetry because i can incorporate my feelings into it, which makes it different to another individual’s. Here is a poem i have written for all those who are coping in Japan.

Hope

A look in the eyes
A smile that shows contentment
A warm feeling in the heart
What is hope?

The ground has been stirred by a great force that is hard to imagine

A happiness that fills the soul
A look towards the future with an open mind
Being taken away from the depths of despair
That is hope

I also play the violin and would like to one day teach violin in Japan. I am of a young age, 15 in fact, but i know that it is something that i would love to do.

I hope that someday you shall reply to this letter so i know you have gotten your life on track and have continued to hope as lives are pieced back together.

We send this small gift so that you will know that we care and are saddened by all you have endured.

I am reminded, as I write this, of a news segment I saw on television some days after the quake and tsunami. Rescuers had come across two struggling, wet and cold dogs. They were both shaking with cold and fright yet the uninjured dog had stayed with his friend and refused to leave his side.

We have seen so many examples of the people of Japan thinking and caring for others even at risk to themselves. We have so much respect for your strength and courage.

It is our hope that the rest of the world will stand by you and help wherever possible.

Amy

My dear friend,

Please accept this small token in the spirit in which it is given; not only as an item of clothing, but as a representation of the love, prayers & best wishes of your brothers & sisters in humanity, from all over the world. I hope this item will bring you some small physical comfort, and show you that you have a place in our hearts, are in our sincerest thoughts & prayers and will be for many years to come. We offer you all our sympathy for the tragedy you have endured.

I can’t imagine what it must be like. But, I’m reminded of a story from a friend of mine. He has a patch of bluebells (a common type of flower in England) at the end of his garden. Every year he would try to pull them up, but they would come back the following year in increased numbers. One year he had an idea, he covered the entire patch with a large piece of an old, heavy carpet. He thought there was no way the bluebells could survive like this. But several months later, he saw something incredible. The bluebells had not given up. They had grown frail, white tendrils, which extended far to the very edges of the carpet, until they found the sunlight. And at the tip of every one, there was a tiny green shoot. In seeing this he realised, the bluebells were trying to be the best they could be; fighting against all odds, they were embodying the very spirit of life. He was greatly inspired by this incredible, infectious, optimistic will to take on the impossible and survive, and even bloom. It touched him so much that he actually started wishing them to succeed in their struggle- he removed the carpet, and now takes great pleasure in watching them grow free.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, you’re wonderful. You are embodying that unbeatable spirit too, and if you try not only am I sure you’ll succeed, but you’ll inspire and earn the support and love of everyone who watches as you do. We do all wish you every success & happiness, pray for you often, and send you all our love. so, don’t give up.

with love, peace & best wishes.
Suzie

To the people of Japan,

My church, family, friends, and myself are praying for your country and your people.
I pray Jesus Christ shows mercy and provides favor for your people, that each day gets easier and brighter. I know it may seem as if God has left you, but all this is means is that your lives are being setup for a blessing. I pray your faith and spiritual life grows stronger as each day goes by. God said in his word that he will never leave nor forsake his people so continue to pray, praise, and wait, because a miracle is coming your way soon. God will continue to provide for his people in a time of need. I remember a story in the Bible that talks about God feeding the five thousand with just one loaf of bread. It may seem this story is just absurd, but nothing with God is impossible.

Love and Greetings from America,

Dear Friend,

Every day I think of you and the people who were affected by the horrible tragedy that hit the northern coast of Japan. My heart goes out to you and I wish I could sit beside you and let you know just how much I care. Please accept these simple socks as a small token of the continued love and support my family sends to you.

My son and daughter were both exchange students to Japan several years ago and have many wonderful memories of their Japanese families and the many friends they met while living in your country. I, too, visited Japan two times and had the opportunity to experience not only the beauty of your country but the warm friendship of the Japanese people.

I am sending you these socks as a gift not only from me, but from my grand-daughters: Chelsea (age 4) Abby (age 6) and Maja ( 6 months old) I am including a photo of them wearing hats that I made for them last Valentine’s Day when I last saw them. I hope that their smiles give you some happiness. They are the future. You are the future. You and your fellow survivors will get stronger every day and will rebuild beautiful lives in your wonderful country. It will take time but you will see signs of the rebirth every day.

Soon it will be Springtime in Northern Japan. In every budding flower and every new leaf I hope you see the promise of a better tomorrow. Know that my family here in the United States keeps you in our thoughts and prayers. Please accept these socks and our sincere well wishes.

All our Love,

Good Day.

I am very sorry about the earthquake in your home land and want you to know I am praying for you and your family.

I know it is not easy, but please know God has promised:

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” –Deuteronomy 31:6

Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! –Psalm 27:14

Dear Friend,

I hope that you like these socks and can use them. The disasters you have been living through are awful, and we all pray for your health and for your country’s recovery. Your people have inspired me to do more work to help people in my country to prepare for disasters, because your preparedness for tsunamis and earthquakes saved many, many lives.

We in Southern California have survived earthquakes and fires but never as challenging as what you are facing. I spent three years helping reconstruct the California State University at Northridge after the 1994 January 17 earthquake; our entire campus was severely damaged and it took many people and a lot of help to repair it. The City and University are repaired now, which makes us happy. This experience gives me a little insight about what you are facing, but our earthquake was on land, only 6.8 magnitude, and didn’t cause tsunamis or harm to power plants.

My heart goes out to you, with my prayers and love too. These socks are just a small gesture on my part to help you and to show you my concern for you. If I can help in other ways please let me know. I’m a 53 year old woman who lives in Los Angeles, CA.

This week, we are celebrating the Cherry Blossom Festival here in Washington, DC. Every year we take our family portrait under a cherry tree to celebrate life, joy and love. We would like to thank Japan for sharing with the United States your gift of life, joy and love with these beautiful majestic trees.

Hello!

We are the youth at Crozier Baptist Church from Elkhorn, West Virginia in the United States. We were shocked to see and hear about the devastation in your country. We are sincerely sorry that we can not be with you personally in this time of need, but please remember that you are in our thoughts, hearts and prayers. Socks may not seem like much to some right now, but it is something that many people do not think about at these times. We all need them in our daily lives, so why not! We hope to brighten your day by letting you know that we all care about you and the rest of your country. Remember to have as much fun as possible, and to smile and laugh as often as you can! Surround yourself with family and friends for comfort, love , and support. Always remember that love , peace, happiness , family and friends are the most important things in life no matter what may happen. And above all things trust and believe in God in the times of joy and the times of your hardships. May God be with you and your nation and bless each of you personally.

Sincerely,

Your courage and hope will bring you through this and things will get better as you begin to rebuild your life. I was fortunate enough to grow up with many Japanese home-stay students and have been lucky to visit Japan a number of times, since my sister and her family live there as well. We recently brought our children to Japan for the first time and now they cherish the country as much as we do. We wish we could do much more to help right now. But please take care and know that there are many, many people worldwide who are thinking of you and praying for strength and peace for you in the times to come.

I can only imagine how hard things must be for you and the rest of your country in this time of trouble. Every time i see the news and hear something about Japan, it brings me to the edge of my seat with worry. I have never been to your beautiful country but i have seen pictures and heard stories from friends who have been there, and i know that your country is a wonderful place to live and visit. I pray for you and and the rest of your country, and i hope that things start to get much better for you in the near future. Peace be with you and God bless.

Hello,
I’m a grade eleven student writing you from Canada. I have recently looked at some of the pictures from the disaster in Japan, and I am deeply saddened. I cannot imagine what you are all going through, what you have lost, and what you are going to discover; however, I can try to comfort you through a simple piece of paper.
I know that times right now are probably really difficult, and it’s going to get better; but it’s not going to be easy. This terrible disaster will hopefully unite your country, and make all of you stronger. This is going to be the hardest time of your life, keep your head held high, and stay strong. Always remember that the world is keeping you, and your family in all of our minds, and we wish you all the best of luck with the future.

Hello,
My name is Amber. I am a student in grade 10 from Canada. I have my deepest condolences to Japan and everyone who lives there. I hope that Japan will be able to fully recover from this disaster. I’ve seen what the media shows on television and on the Internet but I’m sure it is far worse in person, to see the damage right before my own eyes. I worry about the nuclear plants, hoping that they will get under control. It saddens me when I hear of all those who died due to the earthquake and tsunami. I give my best wishes to Japan. Keep you chins up and hope for the best to come.

Sincerely,

This is troop 42025 from Bainbridge Island, WA, on the far side of the Pacific Ocean, but we are still your neighbors. However, an ocean is far away, nearly a whole new world. Sometimes it’s hard to reach out to people who are far away or different than you. But we want to help in every way possible. Things in our package might not be everything you need; they might not even come close. But we want to help you all the same. The crane you find inside this sock maybe be one in a thousand, but carry it as the peace we wish for you. Know we hold you in our hearts and minds.

As you walk though these next difficult days, may your feet be warm.

To my Japanese friend, Greetings

I visited Japan with the Boy Scouts of America in 2008. The love and kindness that your Scouts and the Japanese people gave to me was inspiring. I remember each memory of the beautiful art, cities, temples, and music of Japan. My heart is broken at the sights of your hardship and trouble. I am sending a small gift of socks for you. Please wear them and know that you have a friend America who is thinking of you , your neighbors, and your country and praying for your safety. My hope is that these socks will keep your feet warm and warm your heart and maybe bring a smile to your face. We send our love, concern and prayers for your safety and health. The strength of the Japanese people is legendary. Your noble strength is felt around the world. Stay strong, have courage, and know that you have friends all over the world. You are in our hearts.

To who it may concern:

As you receive this gift from a stranger please know that my prayers are with you and your family during this time.

After you read this letter, look around you and know that you are alive on this day for a reason, you have a purpose, so never forget who you are and where you came from. Never forget all the lives you have changed during your lifetime, never forget that tomorrow can be much better than today, never forget at times when you feel alone that there are millions of people praying for you.

I know in my heart that change will come.

Hello,

We visited Japan for the first time in 2006 and we immediately fell in love with everything Japanese: the people, the food, the culture. Japan has been in our hearts ever since, so we were deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news on the tsunami. Since the Japanese people always have been treating us so kindly we really feel it’s our duty to do something in return.

Please be safe and don’t lose faith. We hope this pair of socks will help you to get through all this, even if it’s just a tiny bit. We think of you and wish you all the best!!

With love,

My heart goes out to you and your family and your neighbors. I cannot imagine how difficult and frightening the situation must be right now but please do not lose hope. All over the world, we are thinking of you and praying for the worst to be over, praying for loved ones to be reunited, praying for life to go on.

It may not be much but I hope you will accept these socks in the spirit which they were given, the spirit of compassion and concern for a friend and neighbor; that same spirit the Japanese people expressed so well when Hurricane Katrina devastated some of our cities. We have not forgotten your friendship then. Whatever we can do to help, we will. So please, don’t lose hope.
